# Cost per Refund: Ad Spend Efficiency for Refunded Orders

> Track Cost per Refund for your Shopify store. Measure ad spend efficiency by calculating the average advertising cost associated with each refunded order.

<Tip>
  Cost per Refund measures the average advertising spend associated with each refunded order on your Shopify store.
</Tip>

## Formula

<Info>
  **Cost per Refund** = **Channel Spend** ÷ **Refund Events**
</Info>

### Formula Components

| Metric                                                                    | Definition                                                         |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| [**Channel Spend**](/reference/metrics/advertising/blended/blended-spend) | Total advertising spend across all channels in the selected period |
| **Refund Events** | Total number of refund events tracked by the Upstack pixel |

| Metadata        |                         |
| --------------- | ----------------------- |
| **Type**        | Currency                |
| **Data Source** | [Upstack Pixel](/pixel) |
| **Aggregation** | Ratio                   |

## Example

Your Shopify store spent **\$10,000** on advertising in January and recorded **50 refunded orders** tracked by the Upstack pixel.

| Metric              | Value        | Calculation           |
| ------------------- | ------------ | --------------------- |
| Channel Spend       | \$10,000     | Total ad spend        |
| Refund Events       | 50           | Total refunds tracked |
| **Cost per Refund** | **\$200.00** | \$10,000 ÷ 50         |

## How It Works

Cost per Refund divides your total advertising spend by the number of refund events tracked by the Upstack pixel. This metric helps you understand how much ad budget is effectively "lost" when customers request refunds. Lower values indicate fewer refunds relative to your ad spend.

## When to Use

| Scenario                                 | Action                                                                |
| ---------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| High refund rates from specific channels | Investigate product-market fit or ad targeting for those channels |
| Monitoring acquisition quality | Compare cost per refund to cost per purchase to assess order quality |
| Evaluating ad creative performance | Identify if certain creatives attract customers more likely to refund |
| Seasonal refund analysis | Track how refund costs fluctuate during peak shopping periods |
