# CM1 MER: Gross Margin Marketing Efficiency

> Track CM1 MER for your Shopify store. Measure gross margin as a percentage of ad spend.

<Tip>
  CM1 MER measures gross margin as a percentage of ad spend—how much gross profit your advertising budget generates.
</Tip>

## Formula

<Info>
  **CM1 MER** = ( **CM1** ÷ **Total Ad Spend** ) × 100
</Info>

### Formula Components

| Metric                                                                      | Definition                                  |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| [**CM1 (Gross Margin)**](/reference/metrics/orders/contribution-margin/cm1) | Profit after COGS                           |
| **Total Ad Spend** | Combined advertising spend across platforms |

| Metadata        |                                                                                                                           |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Type**        | Percentage                                                                                                                |
| **Data Source** | [Shopify](/sources/catalog/shopify), [Meta Ads](/sources/catalog/facebook-ads), [Google Ads](/sources/catalog/google-ads) |
| **Aggregation** | Ratio                                                                                                                     |

## Example

Your Shopify store has **\$75,000** CM1 and spent **\$25,000** on advertising.

| Component   | Value    | Calculation               |
| ----------- | -------- | ------------------------- |
| CM1         | \$75,000 | Gross margin              |
| Ad Spend    | \$25,000 | Advertising cost          |
| **CM1 MER** | **300%** | \$75,000 ÷ \$25,000 × 100 |

## How It Works

CM1 MER shows gross margin relative to ad spend. A 300% CM1 MER means your ads generate 3x their cost in gross margin. Higher is better—it indicates more margin available to cover fulfillment, marketing, and fixed costs.

## When to Use

| Scenario                          | Action                                               |
| --------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| Measuring gross margin efficiency | Track CM1 MER for product-level efficiency |
| Setting targets | CM1 MER should exceed 100% for positive gross margin |
