# CM4 MER: Operating Profit Marketing Efficiency

> Track CM4 MER for your Shopify store. Measure operating profit as a percentage of ad spend.

<Tip>
  CM4 MER measures operating profit as a percentage of ad spend—the ultimate efficiency metric showing true profit from advertising.
</Tip>

## Formula

<Info>
  **CM4 MER** = ( **CM4** ÷ **Total Ad Spend** ) × 100
</Info>

### Formula Components

| Metric                                                                          | Definition                                  |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| [**CM4 (Operating Profit)**](/reference/metrics/orders/contribution-margin/cm4) | Profit after all costs including OPEX       |
| **Total Ad Spend** | Combined advertising spend across platforms |

| Metadata        |                                                                                                                           |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Type**        | Percentage                                                                                                                |
| **Data Source** | [Shopify](/sources/catalog/shopify), [Meta Ads](/sources/catalog/facebook-ads), [Google Ads](/sources/catalog/google-ads) |
| **Aggregation** | Ratio                                                                                                                     |

## Example

Your Shopify store has **\$20,000** CM4 and spent **\$25,000** on advertising.

| Component   | Value    | Calculation               |
| ----------- | -------- | ------------------------- |
| CM4         | \$20,000 | Operating profit          |
| Ad Spend    | \$25,000 | Advertising cost          |
| **CM4 MER** | **80%**  | \$20,000 ÷ \$25,000 × 100 |

***

## How It Works

CM4 MER shows operating profit relative to ad spend. An 80% CM4 MER means your ads generate 80% of their cost in operating profit—you're losing 20% on your ad investment when accounting for all costs.

## When to Use

| Scenario                 | Action                                             |
| ------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Measuring true ad ROI | CM4 MER > 100% means net positive profit from ads |
| Investment decisions | Use CM4 MER to validate ad spending sustainability |
| Performance benchmarking | Track CM4 MER trends to monitor efficiency |
| Budget optimization | Allocate toward channels with highest CM4 MER |
