# How to Connect Shopify to Upstack Data

> Connect your Shopify store under System → Data Sources so Upstack Data imports orders, products, and customers, and the Upstack Pixel captures storefront events.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Data direction:** This is a **source** — data flows **into** Upstack from this platform for analytics, reporting, and enrichment.

Shopify is your primary data source. Once connected, Upstack installs a lightweight pixel on your storefront to capture real-time visitor events, and receives order and product updates directly from Shopify, even when the pixel doesn't fire.

## Prerequisites

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Prerequisites:**
>
> * An Upstack Data account ([sign up for free](https://app.upstackdata.com))
> * Access to your workspace in the Upstack dashboard

You'll also need:

* An **active Shopify store** on any plan (Basic, Shopify, Advanced, or Plus)
* **Store owner** or **staff** access with permission to install apps

### Which Shopify plans does Upstack support?

| Shopify plan | Support |
| - | - |
| Basic Shopify, Shopify, Advanced Shopify | Full — all features available |
| Shopify Plus | Full — all features available |

## Setup

**1. Install the Upstack Data app**

In the Upstack dashboard, open **System → Data Sources** and click the **Shopify** card. In the **Connect your store** dialog:

1. Enter your store address, the part before `.myshopify.com`. To find it, open your Shopify admin and copy the name from the URL (`admin.shopify.com/store/your-store-name`). It can differ from your store's display name.
2. Click **Check store**.
3. Click **Connect with Shopify** to go to the Shopify install flow.

Connecting from the dashboard links your Pixel ID during the install.

Alternatively, install from the [Shopify App Store listing for Upstack Data](https://apps.shopify.com/upstackified) and finish setup in the Upstack dashboard. Accounts created this way are connected to Shopify through the install, so they don't show a **Shopify** card on **System → Data Sources**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> If your organization manages multiple Shopify stores, you'll repeat this process for each store. Each store gets its own Pixel ID and appears as a separate source in your Upstack dashboard.

**2. Authorize data access**

Shopify prompts you to review the permissions Upstack requires:

* **Read products** — to sync your product catalog for content ID matching
* **Read orders** — to ingest purchase events and revenue data
* **Read customers** — to enrich identity resolution with customer profiles
* **Write pixels** — to manage the Upstack pixel in your store. Every other permission Upstack requests is read-only.

Click **Install app** to grant access. Upstack immediately begins configuring your store connection.

**3. Verify the pixel is active**

After installation, open **System → Events Manager** in the Upstack dashboard and confirm your Pixel ID is shown in the page header. See [How to find my Upstack Data Pixel ID](https://docs.upstackdata.com/resources/how-to-find-my-upstack-data-pixel-id.md).

## Change, reconnect, or disconnect

If you connected from the dashboard, click the **Shopify** card on **System → Data Sources** to manage the connection:

* **Disconnect:** click **Disconnect** to stop syncing Shopify data.
* **Reconnect:** after disconnecting, click the **Shopify** card, enter your store address, and click **Check store**, then **Connect with Shopify**.

## What Data Flows In

Shopify provides three categories of data to Upstack:

| Data Type | Source | Frequency | Key Fields |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Storefront events** | Upstack pixel | Real-time | Page views, product views, add-to-cart, checkout, purchase |
| **Order data** | Directly from Shopify | Near real-time, plus a daily re-sync of orders updated in the last 2 days | Order ID, line items, revenue, discounts, refunds, shipping, and the customer on the order |
| **Product catalog** | Directly from Shopify | When a product is created, plus a daily sync | Product ID, title, variants, price, images |

> [!NOTE]
>
> Upstack also performs a **historical backfill** of your orders during initial setup — it requests your store's full order history, not just recent orders. This gives you attribution data from day one without waiting for new events to accumulate.

## You'll Know It's Working When...

> [!TIP]
>
> **Verification checklist:** Complete all items below to confirm your setup is working correctly. If any check fails, see the troubleshooting section below or the relevant [troubleshooting guide](https://docs.upstackdata.com/troubleshooting/destination-token-expired-or-auth-error.md).

* [ ] If you connected from the dashboard, the **Shopify** card on **System → Data Sources** shows **Connected**
* [ ] A Pixel ID is assigned and visible under **System → Events Manager**
* [ ] A test order generates a `Purchase` event with correct revenue and order details

## Troubleshooting

> [accordion] No events appearing
>
> **Check that the pixel is installed correctly** by inspecting your storefront's page source. Search for `upstack` in the HTML — you should see the pixel script tag in the `<head>` section.
>
> **Steps to fix:**
>
> 1. Open **System → Events Manager** in the Upstack dashboard and confirm your Pixel ID is shown in the page header
> 2. Open your storefront in an incognito/private browser window (extensions and ad blockers can interfere)
> 3. If still no events, go to your Shopify admin → **Settings → Customer events** and verify the Upstack pixel is listed and enabled
>
> If the pixel is missing from Shopify's customer events, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Upstack app.

> [accordion] Orders not syncing to Upstack
>
> Orders reach Upstack directly from Shopify. If orders are missing:
>
> 1. Check the [Upstack status page](https://status.upstackdata.com) for any ongoing incidents
> 2. If you connected from the dashboard, click the **Shopify** card on **System → Data Sources** and check that it shows **Store Connected** with your store name
> 3. Confirm the Upstack app still has **Read orders** permission in your Shopify admin → **Settings → Apps and sales channels → Upstack Data**
>
> Orders can arrive a few minutes late at busy times. If they still don't arrive, reinstall or reconnect the Upstack Data app, or contact support.

> [accordion] Historical data not appearing after install
>
> The initial import of your order history runs in the background after install and takes longer for stores with many orders.
>
> If orders from before the install are still missing after 4 hours, contact [support@upstackdata.com](mailto:support@upstackdata.com) with your Pixel ID.

**Still stuck?** Contact [support@upstackdata.com](mailto:support@upstackdata.com) with your Pixel ID and a description of the issue. We typically respond within a few hours.
