# Why Are Upstack Purchase Events Higher Than Shopify Orders?

> Upstack counts one Purchase per Shopify order, across every sales channel. Learn why that is higher than Shopify's Online Store order count and how to compare the two.

If **Purchase Events** in Upstack is higher than the number of orders in a Shopify report, the two are usually counting different sets of orders or different days. Upstack doesn't count the same order twice.

## Is Purchase deduplicated by order ID?

Yes. Upstack records one **Purchase** per Shopify order ID.

Reloading the thank-you page, or opening the order status page again later, doesn't add a second Purchase for that order.

## Does Purchase Events count browser and server events together?

Yes, and each order still counts once.

Upstack gets each order from two places: the Upstack pixel in the customer's browser, and Shopify's order data on Upstack's servers about 10 minutes later. Both carry the same order ID, so Upstack keeps one Purchase. The server copy also records orders the browser missed, for example when an ad blocker stops the pixel or the customer closes the page before it loads.

To see the split, open **Events Manager** and click the **Purchase** event. The **Browser / Server** chart shows how many purchases were recorded from the browser and how many from the server.

## Why is Purchase Events higher than Shopify?

### Purchase includes every sales channel

Upstack records a Purchase for every new Shopify order that is **paid** or **pending**, whichever sales channel created it. Shopify's **Online Store** filter shows only one channel. Orders from other channels are in Upstack's count but not in that filter:

* subscription renewals (for example from ReCharge, Skio or Loop)
* Shop app, Facebook & Instagram, and TikTok Shop orders
* point of sale (POS) and draft orders
* orders other apps create, such as upsell apps that create a separate order, and exchange orders from returns apps

Compare Upstack with Shopify's order count for **all sales channels**. In Shopify, a sales report broken down by **Sales channel** shows how many orders each channel added.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Upstack doesn't send every one of these orders to your ad platforms as a purchase. It skips subscription renewals and draft orders, and for most ad platforms also POS orders and exchange orders.

### Pending, test, and cancelled orders stay in the count

* **Pending** orders (for example bank transfer or cash on delivery) are counted when they're placed, before they're paid.
* **Test** orders placed through checkout are counted like real orders.
* An order that is **cancelled or refunded** later stays counted on the day it was placed.

### The days don't line up

Upstack groups events into days in your **account timezone**, set in **Business Details**. If that isn't your Shopify store's timezone, orders near midnight land on different days in each tool, and single days won't match. See [Why Does the Upstack Dashboard Show a Different Timezone Than Shopify?](https://docs.upstackdata.com/troubleshooting/why-does-the-upstack-dashboard-show-a-different-timezone-than-shopify.md)

## How do I compare Upstack with Shopify?

1. Set your Upstack account timezone to your Shopify store's timezone.
2. In Shopify, count orders for the same dates across **all sales channels**, not only **Online Store**.
3. Compare that with **Purchase** in Upstack.

If the counts still differ after that, [contact support](https://docs.upstackdata.com/troubleshooting/support.md) with the date. We can match Upstack's purchases to your Shopify orders one order ID at a time.
